Does anybody know anything about the Hereford bull, Catapult?
I've been toying with getting a young Hereford bull, as I sold the bull I did have (not a Herf) along with the majority of my cows & calves, a few months ago. We have finally moved to the new place, and I'm starting over with 4 pairs that I retained & moved with us. I've been wanting a Hereford bull for a while and an opportunity has presented itself.
A fellow who lives nearby, is a breeder of registered Herefords. He's got a bull, just the age I'm looking for, for sale. Approx. 13 months old. I haven't been to look at him yet, but plan on it one day this coming week. The bull is a Catapult son. Just wondering what y'all have to say about him...…. good, bad or otherwise.
My cows are a 'mixed bag'. 3 are Angus based, with small amounts of Hereford & Charolais influence, and one is part Jersey with similar lineage as the other 3. 2 are brown/chocolate brockle faced the other 2 are black brockle faced. None of them throw giant calves. The one with Jersey usually has small babies that grow like a weed.

I haven't seen any of them but have heard some good things here and there. I glanced at him a bit ago. I like his looks okay. I wouldn't sell him as a calving ease bull but at one point I had three with very similar calving ease epd's running around and never had any trouble. His milk looks high but herefords are not exactly known for being sopping wet and you have plenty of grass so that doesn't bother me. His MCW is a little bigger than I'd like but they're not going to be huge cows. If carcass is any concern you might want to look elsewhere. He's not going to help at all on quality grade.

I don't know anything about that particular bull, but we have used some Hereford bulls for several years. I like the calves, we haven't had any difference in calving using CE Angus bulls and average or a little above average BW Hereford bulls. I prefer to breed heifers to CE Angus bulls, but we have bred a few Hereford and HerefordX heifers to an average BW Hereford bull with no issues thus far. I think with Angus cross cows a Hereford would likely give a bit of a boost in weaning weights. I had a few Jerseys at one point and I like the Hereford cross calves much better than Angus cross in terms of growth and volume. The only issue there is that with a straight Jersey bred to a Hereford some of the resulting calves can come out brindle. If the Jersey is already crossed that might be minimized, caused in my experience the next generation calves from the brindle cows have not been. In terms of milk, years ago I got a hold of some Herefords that didn't milk too well, but in recent years, the ones we have now are on par with any other good calf raising cows.

I have looked at several sons and a few daughters. IMO they are solid moderate cattle. Moderate in size and muscling. They are too moderate for me. The ones I've seen lack the length I desire also. But they are what many breeders look for. I prefer a little more bone and muscle than those I've seen.
