Pink eye, I hate it. The face flies have been really tough here at the end of the season. I look at their eyes each day and noticed that one of my older cows that had a slight milky appearance and could not keep her eye open.
I went to Co-op and purchased an extra bottle of Noromycin 300, and more pink eye vaccine. I know that the pink eye vaccine will not make it go away, but wanted to treat them again to make sure that those that did not have it, the med would help to fight it off later.
I gave each cow a 3cc per 100 lbs and they are large cows and gave it sub-q. So they had to have multiple shots as you can only give 10 cc per shot in one area. I poured Martin's pour on down their backs, and sprayed their faces with face spray that had an oil base. Then sprayed their eyes with a pink eye wash.
No flies are on the cows now and #211 that had the start of pink eye, is looking much better.
The cattle are so sore from the shots as they were given in both sides of the neck. I hate to see how sore they are, but, the Norbrook Vets at the business told me that if I gave them a higher dose, that it would last 7 days. I always think about using a drug that needs much smaller amounts of vaccine. When I looked at Draxxin, for the number of cows that I had to treat would have been over $1200. I keep Draxxin on hand for a cow that becomes sick and I have it to go to for a quick recovery.
I did go with the option of the cheaper drug, but I hate how it effects the cattle.
It is working, and now to just wait until they get over the soreness.
