I like cats. My dog likes cats, as I have one. I also have my bird's name for my profile. I suppose that this points to me?

Can we please make a rule? No cat people allowed... I'm fine with a good mouser but I don't trust people that will pick a cat over a dog as a pet... they rank right up there with people that choose bird names for their profiles for reasons other than to make fun of other people that chose bird names for their profiles. Does this mean I'm going to be banned

I have a pet door as my dogs and cat come and go as they please. Several times Otis the cat comes in with a live rat squealing and I freak out. The dogs go nuts and I try to grab Otis in a way that he will not let it go. A few times he lets it go and my Jack Russell, Abbey, is there to catch it. I just hate it when he does that. Often I see him outside eating rats, voles and mice that he has caught. I keep cat food out for him but he still has that great hunting instinct and loves the taste of the fresh meat. Often I find Otis sleeping on top of Mike (Catahoula) on the dog bed. They are great buddies and Otis is always rubbing on him and lays with him. My husband did not like cats but he does like Otis.
If they had more cats in Philadelphia, some of their rat problems would be cured.

Tell me about heartworms in dogs.....
I have a spayed female..about 5 years old that i had in the vets yesterday. She had gotten rather 'fat' in the last few months and laid around a lot but liked to follow me on the 4 wheeler, but recently, would have to stop and rest a lot. I put it off that it was her weight. "Severe heartworms" was the diagnosis, with fluid around the lungs and a respiratory infection.

Right now, she's on meds to get rid of the infection and pull fluid off before they start her on heartworm 'treatment'. Lasix, Prednisone, and amox. Return in 2 weeks. She's still active, eats well and plays with the other dog, but now I know and I feel bad i didn't take her in sooner.
She's "just a dog" if you know what I mean...wouldn't trade her for anything, but definitely not a working dog.

Unfortunately many owners are naive about the disease and its repercussions. There numerous products that protect dogs. None are cheap but if you value your dog (s) its cheap in the bigger picture.

I have a gawdawful allergy to cats, which makes for a really great excuse to avoid them. Very handy.
