AAA Sire search of main sires: only 2 criteria used: SC and HP
SC +2 min HP @ +15 min = 6 bulls HP @ +20 = 0 bulls
Next SC +.5 max
HP @ +15 min = 44 bulls
HP @ +20 = 1 bulls
Next
SC +.5 to +2
HP @ +15 min = 100 bulls
HP @ +20 = 6 bulls

The old adage has more to do with maturity time than Heifer pregnancy rates.

There is a correlation but it's so small it's not worth worrying about. I don't remember the exact numbers that I saw but it was something to the effect of every extra cm of sc was worth one day of earlier maturity on the heifer side.

That is interesting. I’m not familiar with the HP EPD. Is it figured with just that, percentage of heifers bred after being exposed? Could there be other things factoring in like are there a lot more bulls out there with smaller SC EPD’s?

I disagree with Randy and Okie on this one as the HP is supposed to tell that heifers bred early on the first exposure. That would cover all of their concerns. My point: with bulls like EXT - the adage has some rotten floorboards and the correlation is not cast iron.

I don't see the point in having heifers that start to cycle at 6 months old. I figure if they are cycling and breed at 14 to 15 months old thats plenty good and less to worry about. The bigger scrotal in newer studies that i have read doesn't seem to fit the old adage. As far as EXT i wouldn't know anything about him other than he is a angus bull.

A discussion as had on the Acclaims in a feed test, stating that 3 of the 4 didn't pass the scrotal measurement. I went on to investigate this to see what was a pass or fail because nearly half the bulls flunked. The circumference at 14 months had to be at a 34 (if I recall correctly) and each was adjusted for age.
I honestly have never really weighted SC on any bull I've looked to purchase UNLESS its EPD was drastic. In saying that, our bulls are clean up. Yes, they need to do the job but if we've done our jobs right, they don't have a lot of work ahead of them. The size of our pastures require more than one and we always do a BSE (EVERY SINGLE YEAR)... so I just don't know that the SC epd really relates to me.

I was at the vet's the other day for a bse. I had commented about the 38cm he measured on my bull and he said he thought people put way more into it than maybe was necessary, in the context of bulls getting cows bred. He said he's seen some 38's concentration that were going to outbreed some 43's, given the same labido. I realize this is not in the context that the discussion is about, but thought I'd just throw that out there.
