I have a cow that laps water like a dog. Very seldom does she try to sip water with her lips, but when she does, it seems she cannot get her lips sealed off to create a suction. She sounds as if a kid is sucking through a straw loudly when she does.
I have noticed that her two daughters do the same thing. After feeding them, they stand at the water trough and lap it up long after the others have moved out to the pasture.
Does anyone else have cows that drink water in this way? I am just interested as her family of cows do this and wondered if it is more common than I realized.

I'm wondering if the cow's palate structure is a bit off and that's her way of compensating. If so, I bet the calves have learned the behavior. One of the twins my daughter's really old cow had this spring had a funky nose/top lip thing going on for a while. You could always see her top "gums", like a girl with a short upper lip, if that makes sense. She is the smaller of the twins, so it may have held her back in performance a bit. I weaned the twins this past weekend, and aside from a bit of size difference, you would never know she had the funny top lip thing going on...

I just wondered if it was more common, but of all the cows that we have had, she was the only one that drinks like this. I cannot see any difference in her lips and gums, but you may be right that their may be a difference inside somewhere. It is hard to believe that she can get enough water drinking this way. But she is one of my largest cows, and her weight holds good. I do appreciate hearing that none of you have ever seen it before, so it lets me know that something is a bit off here.
