Loading out this coming Wednesday. I'm pretty happy with the job a lot of the second calvers have done. Hopefully they are bred back in time.

Did you sell them on the farm or are they going to the stockyard? If so how far do you have to truck then.

Did you sell them on the farm or are they going to the stockyard? If so how far do you have to truck then. This year we are going to try something different. A buyer who does a lot of buying at many of the auction yards is receiving cattle at his place and paying what the type are worth on the market that day. He's a fair guy, so I have hopes that it will turn out well. If the price is the same as the sale barn and I save $8K in commission I will call it a win. The trucking trip will be about 3 hours one way.

Well it ended up going fairly well for the year. He sorted the steer calves into two pens, the larger pen averaging 713 lbs and the smaller pen average 591 lbs. $2.08 / lb for the heavies, 2.10 for the little guys (Canadian dollars.... so about $1.59 USD) The good part was the heavy pen had about 3.5 times as many calves in it as the lighter pen. Very fair to deal with, I believe I may go the same route next year. The one pic I took, kinda showing a pen of steers during sorting at home:

They done well Silver. No commission and no 2 dollar a head checkoff? No commission, but you can't avoid checkoff and brand inspection. Checkoff for us is $5.00 per head.

Ours is only 2 dollars, i do hope yours is used better than ours is. I don't believe it is. $2.50 of ours is federal, $2.50 provincial. We can apply to get back the provincial portion, and I may do that this year in protest.
