Thursday I bought a dozen feeder heifers. These are tail end and cut out heifers from much larger herds. I plan on picking up another dozen or so in the next week or two. The plan is to winter them, go to grass for about 100 days in the spring, and sell in July. They averaged 450 and I paid $1.33.

Are you going to sell as bred heifers?

Were they weaned?

Are you going to sell as bred heifers? No they are feeder heifers. I wouldn't be buying the small tail end and cut outs to breed. In fact they will be grazed along with steers so we are going to spayed all the heifers. That way you don't have a heifer come in heat followed all day by 30 steers. Also makes it pretty easy to guarantee them open.
They were all weaned and a double round of shots. Pretty much all the calves going through the sale here will have that program.

I had a tough time getting calves bought today at Vale Oregon. The first bunch in the ring was 6 black steers weighing 352. The brought $2.04. Next bunch weighed 379 and brought $2.03. A little later a group of 7 weighing 355 brought $2.10. They were selling heifers for about 15 cents more than I was willing to pay. I spent 4 hours mostly sitting on my hands. I did get 9 bought but I had to drop down a bit in quality.

Your price is over .60-.80 higher than ours. My 325 lb calves are costing less than 1.10 and that's the middle calves.

I went to La Grande on Thursday. The way it works here this time of the years is ranches are bringing in potloads. They will sell all the calves from one ranch and then move to the next one. They generally sell steers first starting with the biggest cut. They sell the steers and then move to the heifers. Being as I am buying lighter heifers I get to sit and watch a lot. But early on in this sale I got 8 head bought in the first hour. Then a late arrival came and sat behind me. I might as well have gone home then. But no, I stayed and came in second in the bidding for another two and a half hours. I should get a thank you card from a lot of ranchers.

That's mighty nice wish you were here bidding my heifers up. I would but I think the freight hauling them home would be a killer.

Kenny and I are in the same general area/market. Sat Friday at the yard and watched steers bring in the 1.00 to 1.50 range, most in the 1.25-1.40's. Heifers were in the .90 to 1.20 with most in the 1.00-1.10 range. Sold a group of bred average decent black heifers at the beginning of the sale, for 1050, several bred cows that weighed in the 12-1400 lb size for 5-700 and a few w calves by their side for the same 5-700. Anything showing any dairy was in the .40 to .60 range steers or heifers.

I bought a few black and BWF heifers yesterday weighing 305 for an average of 1.05. I don't want them that light but here you would add 40-60 cents on that. I did the math on what I have bought for myself and for neighbor B. I have averaged $1.33 on 29 heifers and 2 bulls that averaged weighing 453. I only need another 4 calves. I don't know how many more B wants, but he hasn't said stop yet. The other day when that guy was out bidding me I was stopping at $1.40.

Well today one of first sets of heifers would have matched the ones I have great. I thought I will take these home with me. Wrong. Black heifers weighing 450. They sold for $1.60. I sat there for 4.5 hours. Mostly I sat on my hands. When I did bid I rarely came in second. More like third or fourth. I wanted those 450 average heifers for $600. They were more like $700. I did get 3 bought but they are the smallest ones in the pen now. They have a good frame but certainly not fat at 390. I guess other people are seeing that those light heifers have been under priced.

I wish I could get near that price here. How far are you from the feedlots?
