Quote: I would also add that no breed has transformed itself more than the Angus breed, and they didn't open their herd book to do it. LOL I had to laugh at that one. Not bashing any breed, but Angus didn't get their height overnight by breeding Angus to Angus back in the 70's - 80's. Every breed has had some "mystery" genes in their pedigree. We had an Angus rep at our NYSF and he pulled every animal in the show sired by "XX" bull, because he had Holstein in his DNA profile. The Simmental breed is upfront with any crossbreeding. Like BR said, you can look at the pedigree of your bulls and determine how "pure" his lineage is. A 3/4 blood bull bred to a 7/8 cow gives you a Purebred offspring by our ASA breed rules. Used to be a bull had to be 15/16 to be considered PB. I liked that, but I go with the flow. Recent years, I have used a few 3/4 bulls. Executive Order is one. Most of my cows are way more than the 7/8 - going back 30+ years in most of my cow families. I shipped a cow last year that was the last of my cow family going back to 1972 - my first set of 1/2 bloods. Thanks. That is a great point. BTW: A Breed Association can set "standards" for a breed but it is NOT correct to say "the Breed Association protects the purity of the Breed". The purity of the breed depends on the honor and honesty of the breeders. The data reported is totally based on the honor system among the breeders and members. What they report and the true parentage of the progeny. I am not directing that at you, Jeanne. I state that in response to Silver.

There were shenanigans in all breeds at the time, I wouldn't go assuming that all Simmental bloodlines are exactly as we would be led to believe. I think it's a safe bet that after the Quarter Horse breed book was closed that there were characters adding mystery genes to the pool as well. Thankfully now we have dna requirements and those days are theoretically behind us. But the fact is that the Angus Association and the Quarter Horse Association are the two most successful breed organizations to this day, and they have kept their books officially closed. In Canada we still must be 15/16 for a bull to be PB, and 7/8 for a female. The calculated percentage is at the top of every registration paper. It is my thought that a breed association will often start with an open book to get enough of a gene pool to work with effectively then close it up and work from within. Simmental cattle have been here long enough I think the book should be closed entirely, and they should stop trying to be all things to all people. The ASA is starting to look like a Latter Day Saints cattle genealogy website. My family has had a long standing relationship with the Simmental breed. Not many people on this side of the pond can say they had registered Simmental cattle before we did. But that doesn't mean I have to agree with the direction the breed is heading.
