Build me a few while you're at it. How many you want.? Need to know the gap between gate and post.

I have seen a few different homemade styles. Hope you post some pics of how you build yours. Thinking I am going to try some on a few of mine.

Didn't build our own latches, but used purchased latches. The one below is not exact but very similar mechanism to what was used. They have the top latch only. They work fine in most places, but if you get a gate bent where it gets deviated up or down, then it throws off the latch and you have to pick up or push down to close it vs slamming it. Something like the one below would allow for movement but still allow the gate to catch. If I were creating my own, I'd allow for a longer opening up and down, and consider a slightly wider width to allow the catch to catch on it's way by. Or place a backstop of some sort so that it couldn't swing past. My experience is if slammed too hard, this type does not always catch.

That is the kind of latch I build. The ones in first pic are what you find around here but I can't find the any lass than 20 bucks a piece.

I built about 20 of the ones in potentate's lower photo. They work okay if the gate is adjusted right. They will miss the slot a lot of times if the gate is swung hard and fast. If not used for a while you need to check them because our black soil allows enough movement to where they may not be working like they were when you left them last time. I put a chain and hook for a backup on all my gates so I won't have to mess with them if I only have one cow to catch.

If you don't do some welding on this latch it isn't worth a darn under pressure situations. The slider will bend down freeing the striker if you don't weld a bolt inside the V. Here's a pretty good latch set up besides the striker needs to be welded or bolted to the gate. www.amazon.com/SPECIAL-SPEECO-PRODUCTS-S16100100-Latch/dp/B01707X31I

Vince, I have a few like that, in more pressure situations I will drill through and bolt them to the gate. They even got the pilot holes for you.

Here are the components. Latch installed. I mainly use these on 4' gates and bigger ones I might open 50 times. I always have chain backup.
