That is pretty neat Dave as I can understand the loss of time it takes to go so far to get the things you need. But still, being out to yourself is such a nice thing!

That is beautiful Dave!! I feel I live away from others when I cannot see a house from mine, but you are living the true meaning of living out to yourself. It appears you have so much going on there. I suppose looking at the map of where your county is placed, it just appears you are really close to those states. I am at one end of Tennessee, and if you look at the map it doesn't look that far from the far tip of East TN. But if you drive it, then you have driven over 500 miles. I think that would be a wonderful place to live! Looks pretty green there too. Out here distance gets measured in time rather than miles. In Idaho the freeway speed limit is 80 MPH. It is 70 here in Oregon but drive 70 here and everyone (freight trucks included) will pass you. At 75 there is still a fair number passing. my ol' truck only gets up to about 75 and they zip by me like nothing.
i was in my wifes truck coming back from a trip and set the cruise at 78. i was passing some but most were just staying with me, and a few flying by me like nothing. . i've never set the cruise so fast before.

Speaking of rain, we got .46" yesterday, and now with Laura coming over West TN, we are about to get more unless they are wrong about the tracking. Often they report major thunderstorms coming and we never get a drop. Last time we had a big rain, there was a light tornado that came though, and took down my tool shed, and picked up my calf hutch and I have not seen it anywhere. I found the door to it out in the pasture, but it is long gone. It twisted a couple of trees up down the road and tore up another farmers roof. I hope it does not do that again. I did replace the calf hutch, and I would like to keep it.

We got the 1st bands from Hurricane laura about an hour ago. Rained and blew hard for about 1/2 hour, calm and drizzle now. Not supposed to be a big rain maker but I expect significant wind around 11pm or midnight. Should be a fast mover and get on up into NW La or NE Texas by 10am Thursday. You were the first person that I thought of when I saw where it was projected to hit. I hope all is well. Please update us when you get a chance.

The TV channels seem to over sensationalize the weather for ratings I do believe. We were supposed to have really high winds and flooding here. When it reached us, we got a little over 1" of rain and the wind blew hard enough to make the limbs sway a little. It was a good soaking rain after the .46 we got a few days earlier. It shows we might get more rain tonight.
Seems when the farmers start trying to cut beans and corn is when it begins to rain here. I am anxious to start riding the edge of the fields when it is dry after they cut the crops.

We got just enough to keep the country from lighting up from a lightning storm. Found two dead cows and a calf.....possibly more that will never be found.

I'm two weeks into my fall calving with 20 on the ground so far. Lost one abandoned twin to the buzzards. Cows are handling the 102 degree heat well. Not ideal calving weather. I have a nice thick patch of Johnson grass that I turned the cows into last week. They love it but it makes it tough to check the newborns. You have to be careful not to run over them. I have been checking them on the rancher so I can see better. 3/10ths of rain here since July 10. When a hurricane misses us to the east, it sucks all the moisture out with it but leaves the heat. I'm ready for fall.

Angusrancher, I am sorry to hear that you lost a cow and calf from the lightening. It hits close here as it knocks my fencer out from time to time. I know you were not a happy camper when you found those two. I hope you don't find any more.

Now that it has rained, each morning I am waking up to less than .10" of rain each night. I appreciate it, but it sure makes the top layer of clay mud on the hill where the barn is slicker than owl snot.

tcranch, I hate to see how much time and labor you put into putting in the culvert to have it all washed away. It sure looked nice too. We got a LOT of rain for the last 4 days. I even stopped looking at the rain gauge, as the lot is almost as bad as it is in the winter. I too need to get some dirt work done around the barn before the end of October as that is when the rain sets in.

Forecast yesterday was 10% chance of rain. Wrong!!! Over 5" in 3 hours. The brand new 20 ft. culvert at the south pond is GONE, downstream, mangled in trees because the dirt & clay didn't have enough time to set. Roads are washed out, the other ponds flooded, watershed lake is raging, sump pump working overtime. I'll still take it over a drought but dayum! Holy Crap! That's a LOT of rain by our standards. Culvert didn't stand a chance.
