Weve been raising pigs for about 10 years now. Usually 2 at a time, but that was with the entire family around us. We did 3 last time, and that was a bunch of meat. I think I'm going to start doing one at a time when we are done with these 2. Does anyone else raise em?

I'm wanting to get back into it but it looks like I may be spending a bunch of time on the road so I won't jump until I know what my schedule is going to look like. I like having a sow around. My last one was a big old spot sow that was a show pig in her younger days. She would come when you called her. She acted like a big friendly dog complete with wagging her tail when you spoke to her.

Used to. Does that count? Why did you stop? Because I know you like your bbq! 😀 I first started back in the early 80's when I was living a different life with a different wife. She had kids in 4H & FFA and they wanted projects to show. We bought a couple gilts and did well with them so we took the next step and bred them. That lasted about 5 years when one graduated and the other showed his last time in his senior year and divorce was getting close.
In '99 I married again and she had one kid that wanted to show, so I got back into the pig biz. After his senior year I stayed with it a few more until the old barn got unsafe and the wife wanted it torn down. Just didn't bother building anything back. Almost pulled the trigger again a couple years ago but when my lung issues sprang up I gave up on the pig idea and got rid of most of my chickens.

Cant say I blame you. That sure sounds like work. Hope you get your wind back, maybe a pig or 2 will be in your future

Pork is way to cheap to raise yourself. IMO

I like messing with them and have spent a number of hours just setting at the pens drinking a cold beer. Most of the time doing that would draw a crowd because friends would pass by and see the big light on in the barn and know what I was doing. Just wish they had brought their own beer.

The show pig deal is bigger than what you would think even around here. I have a friend in Nebraska that raises show pigs has a show pig auction every spring. Some of them would be pretty expensive bacon.

Depends on what they want in the ring. Any of them need about 30 days on feed after being jockeyed around to shows.

Them show pigs don't eat worth a damn. Why not? They sure look good I have bought two different ones from 4H kids, they looked awesome, but didn't taste very good, and had way to much fat. I ain't no hog expert, but a guy told me it is because of how they are conditioned/fed for show.

Back in highschool for show pigs I would just go to the lot that had the size I wanted and pen it up. Spend a couple days training it and off to the fairgrounds we would go. Things sure have changed.
