Fine for me, calves lived both times, cows didn't, to be honest, cows got down and that was the only reason we did it. Done plenty of DAs with no issues, bit it's been a while.

Ours was about the same, but we didnt get the calf in time because we had to run for supplies. Cow lived about 24 hours. Probably down too long |

I'm sorry to hear you lost them both. I have never had to do it. Would I? I suppose if I were in a situation where there was a great sense of urgency and no time for a vet, I would probably give it a go. Certainly far different from running a hose down into them to relieve bloat. |

Ya. It wasnt fun. It was about 2 years back. All the vets in 5 counties were away at a large animal conference. Nothing to do but try, doing nothing was sure death for both.
Since then ive done one on a neighbors goat too. That one was a cluster from the word go. He swore the goat was full term. She prolapsed, and said hed put her down and id get the kids out. His “vet” said it was a lost cause.
He shoots her in the head, I get the kids out in 20 seconds flat. 3 kids that were about a 2 months premature. Idiot.

Didn't Raven post a video of GCreek doing a C-section? It was actually pretty impressive. I was our vet's assistant during our one & only C-section - no way could I do it by myself.

That would be good to see, just in case I was in a bind one day. Maybe Gcreek can give us the play by play on that. I wouldnt know where to start, other than with a knife in the area behind the ribs.

Lay the cow on its right side. Cut from the top of the “triangle” down. Move the rumen out of the way, open the uterus, remove the calf, sew uterus up, sew wall up, sew hide up its not pretty. In our case I think the uterus ruptured because as we opened up the cavity, there was pressure and it pushed everything out. But obviously im not a vet. With the goat, there wasn't any ofnthat internal pressure |

We used to do a lot of them. One year back in the eighties we had a train wreck and Dad did 22. That's when I learned. The need arises so seldom anymore that I make the trip to the vet. If I lived as far from the vet as gcreek I would continue to do them myself. I still have the supplies including local anesthetic, catgut, needles and such. The biggest thing is cleanliness, and that's where we starting getting a little careless towards the end as we got out of practice.

Brad (cant remember his ct name) showed me how that spray on lidocaine can be used as a local to some degree. And anbesol for teeth pain.
