The original Sims in their original colors did not carry so much hair and did well in the south and on fescue. The worst cattle we had later here were some AI calves from the best of black Sims of that day. They could function about 6 months of the year and they left quickly once the spring came and they showed little to no tolerance. I do not want or need more of that.

I just took these 10 minutes ago. In the first picture, the bull calf on the far right is an Optimizer: (Mike that is the Eagle calf on the left). This is an Optimizer heifer nursing a big Hudson Pine/Rocking P cow. This is an Optimizer Heifer.

I still would like to have used Basin Payweight 107S. He is completely full from his neck back to his flanks. No dip in the heart girth, with a huge muscle that flows to his ribcage. A nice thick flank with muscle bulging in the rear. His numbers are great. I do believe he weighed 82 lbs when he was born and was a mid 3 number like 3.2 or 3.4 BW. But most of my cows are large and can easily have a calf that size.
I tried to AI them myself, but I could not stand there very long with neck and shoulder problems due to a head injury, and would give out. I still have the greatest fear of poking a hole in the reproductive tract that I am slow. Then I give out by the time I get close to locating the cervix. I think it is a sign that I don't need to be AI'ing cattle. I went to the school and was able to locate the cervix. I am so afraid of killing one of my cows and cannot over ride it. I also used the CIDR's and still waited for the cow to be in standing heat. I just could not get them to stick. It made me really angry with myself when I caused the cow lose a month, and then risk it the next time to put it off another month.
Now I just use the best bull I can afford and go with the flow. I am jealous of how Brightraven is able to AI his own cattle. Ha-ha!! I can see that if I can master anything that I wish to do might mean that I would be difficult to live with.

I took a class taught by Select Sires. Kenley Conner was the instructor. We have become good friends. He still runs his route through my district and services my tank. BTW: Select Sires owns HPF Optimizer and I get my canes from Kenley We had 42 cows in the class at the Maysville Stockyards. Finding the cervix was never a problem. I don't think I have ever spent more than 10 seconds getting on the cervix. I still on occasion have one that takes a little time to pass the rod through. I am careful with the AI syringe. You don't force it, you guide it. I can see where your injuries would make it unpleasant.

It would be so great to use any bull that I choose. It was a dream that I had to let go of.

Highgrit, after a head injury I developed Dystonia in my head neck and shoulders. When I stand with my arms up for a period of time, it causes a charlie horse to run from my head down into my shoulders. It hurts like hell. It is just not meant to be and I was really upset about it at first. But, it is just the way it is. But I do appreciate you cheering me on.

It's not so much the hair, it's the hair-do I think that turns me off. The show look. Seems with enough hair and a good hair dresser a bad bull can look a lot better. 3LT All the studs bulls are presented clipped, combed, and posed. It is simply the state of the art! All the semen companies follow these criteria whether it is Genex, Select Sires, ABS, etc. It goes further, I looked at the criteria for consigning to some of the higher profile seedstock sales. In addition to such criteria as BSE, vaccination, etc. They require clipping and professional pictures. That's just flat not true. Yes, the bull of the month backyard genetics are presented that way but I have seen many high unit sales bulls photographed in working clothes. You know not of what you speak.

Maybe for some folks it takes more explanation. The bulls presented by the major semen companies, as stated above, such as Genex, Select Sires, ABS, etc., are presented as clipped, combed and professionally photographed. In regard to the "higher profile" Sales in Kentucky. As I stated, in case you didn't read it carefully, I used the phase "higher profile seedstock sales". For example, the Bulls of the Bluegrass. Which Is a Simmental sale administered By Doug Parke . They require the bulls to be clipped for presentation at The Sale. Furthermore, they require professional photographers for the Catalog . Read It Again. That Is Exactly As I Stated It Above. I agree that the lower tier seedstock sales do not hold sellers to those criteria. In fact, with regard to Simmental Sales in Kentucky there are some sellers who have expressed a desire for lower standards.

The bulls presented by the major semen companies, as stated above, such as Genex, Select Sires, ABS, etc., I've sold semen for all of the above plus some and walked with photographers to see cattle from all of the above plus some. You're just wrong.
