29 public land tags were drawn here in Arkansas yesterday. We will have a 30 to 40 head private land quota. I’ve been trying to draw in Kansas for a few years. We’ve been going OTC in Idaho and having a blast. Gives me good reason to stay in “elk shape” instead of being a couch potato

If you get a public land tag here it pretty easy really. If you are into real big ones it gets a little tough. Private land hunts are hit and a miss.

I’m still trying to kill one. Have called them in for others but haven’t had a shot other than a cow and a calf. We are all archery so adds some excitement. Especially in grizz country.

And September is about the only time we have before harvest.

I will give you shout some day when we have them and give you a chance here/

I have some pretty nice elk all around me. None or rarely on my property. This year I was drawn for a cow tag that runs from Oct 12 to Dec 31. One of my neighbors has a elk herd in his alfalfa field in mid October. A nice fat dry cow out of the alfalfa that gets put into the pickup by a loader tractor sure beats a big bull in the bottom of a canyon.

Bet that would make life much easier.

I have shot 12 bulls and hunting partners have shot a bunch. None of them were anywhere near a road. Mostly up hill to a road. Crawling up a hill with a quarter of elk on the back isn't nearly as much fun as it use to be.

He was only 3/4 of a mile from the road where would dump him and I hiked back to get the truck after that. Three of us took him out in one trip, I sure wouldn’t have wanted to carry that much 4-5 miles real bad.

The vast majority of the elk I have been involved with were Roosevelt elk on the Washington coast. They have smaller antlers than their Rocky Mountain cousins. But bigger bodies. For the last 20 years or so we hunted an area behind locked gates. This was timber company ground. It was walk in or peddle a mountain bike. Three of us averaged better than one elk a year. And I don't remember any of them being closer than 4 miles from the gate. A couple were 9 miles from the gate. Shoot one and it turns into work real fast. I was kind of proud of myself hunting there after I turned 60. Most of the people you meet in there were in their 20's or 30's.
