I learned that with a spooked herd of elk that first 3 or 4 will jump a fence after that they just run right through it. And a herd of elk hit a fence at least 100 feet of fence is going down.

So you can't do anything about them? Nothing legally. Allowing hunters to hunt is about it. We have an open season in Sept thru Oct, and a limited entry (draw) Dec thru Feb. I put a bale or two of hay out during the LEH season to draw them in for the hunters. I know they’re a PITA for you but I’d love to have some around for just a week or so!

That's a fact, and the main reason I stopped well back to let them cross the fence while I took the video. I waited until they were all through before I continued to the gate.

I had a rented pasture about 7 miles from the house. Six years in a row while I was off elk hunting elsewhere someone shot an elk either in that field or the neighbors place. My cows would already be out of there but come spring I had serious fence repair to do. And don't ask why I didn't shoot an elk there myself. In the 15 years that I rented the place I only saw any elk there one time. And that was about two months after season. I knew an old dairy farmer who resorted to single strand electric fence. He said it was enough to keep old dairy cows in and easier to fix when the elk knocked it down. He said that every now and then he would get mad at the elk. He would hop on a quad with a shotgun loaded with trap loads. Off he would go tearing through the fields shooting the elk in the butt. He said it made him feel better and the elk stayed away for a week or so. Down side was there was a lot of fence repair to do.

There are more and more Axis deer here every time you read about them. 40,000 in 92 Texas counties either on private land and estimated 8000 running free.
