Well a few million head of buffalo would sure wreck alot of fence in kansas. I bet they would do good on those wheat fields. The Rocky Mountian elk we have here was not the native species. And they wreck a lot of fence now and then. I don't expect my take to be a popular opinion. We have elk that were reintroduced on public lands in the state and they make it up our way from time to time. They will never be what they once were population wise and shouldn't be as we have altered the landscape to where that isn't feasible. The existence of a native species is a lot different than restoring them to their numbers presettlement. As far as Rocky mountain elk not being the native species, and elk is an elk the same that a bovine is a bovine. While their may be differences within the species similar to breeds of cattle it doesn't change the species. It'd be like taking one of those runt Texas whitetail bucks and kicking him loose in Iowa. Doesn't make him anything other than a deer. Buffalo were turned into livestock essentially everywhere but the national park. There are quite a few contained by 5 wire barbed wire fence in the state. Cattle replaced bison on the landscape anywhere that isn't farmed.

From what i have read the Elk native to this area were quite different than the Rocky Mountian elk. Doesn't matter no one asked for my permission to bring them back here. I make a living feeding them so i ain't complaining except about the price of land in this area now.

As far as I know there are three sub species of elk around today. The Rocky Mountain, Roosevelt, and Tule. I am not sure where the Roosevelts came from but Teddy is give credit for bring them back to the PNW. I do know there were lots of elk on the coast when Lewis and Clark were there. They wrote in the diaries that they spent the winter eating lean elk and drinking branch water. The Tule are on the north California coast. As far as I know that is there native range.
Elk are hard on fences. But I would much rather deal with that than the wolves they saw fit to reintroduce. Now there is a movement to bring grizzly to the northern cascades in Washington. I think we need to send wolves, and grizzly to San Francisco. Better send them elk too so they have something to eat.

I'm of the opinion that if anything naturally migrates to an area it's mother nature's will. For humans to decide where they need to be is not good.

I'm of the opinion that if anything naturally migrates to an area it's mother nature's will. For humans to decide where they need to be is not good. We've decided where everything should be across the entire world. I do agree that they should let the wolves and bears move back into areas on their own as the ones that make it will be the smart ones and not the problem causers. But to say we shouldn't have any effect on wildlife and wild places just isn't feasible as we have altered every landscape in the country at this point.

These are the freeloaders and fence wreckers we deal with on a daily basis. Took this video yesterday morning.

How do you have any hay or grazing? Gets tougher every year. As you can see in the video they had a very successful calving season.

Is it private land or government? The video is taken on a piece gov't land that is bordered on three sides by my private land. And it is gov't land on which we maintain the tame pasture and infrastructure (fences, water, etc.)

We have an open season in Sept thru Oct, and a limited entry (draw) Dec thru Feb. I put a bale or two of hay out during the LEH season to draw them in for the hunters.
