I can't imagine going through all the trouble and expense of AI for 14 more lbs of weaning weight over a cleanup bull. You're losing money, I guarantee it. Some folks can't see the forrest for the trees. I can make that at least break even on paper. If you add in timed AI so there is the potential for 70%plus of your calves being born on day one of calving season it looks pretty good. I personally wouldn't do it for the weight difference but as a management tool it's pretty handy. Add in known genetics and the consistency of having somewhere around seventy percent of your calves born to the same bull and it's a no brainer. Where I was at in CA AI was near impossible on my commercial cows. Instead I hauled my registered cows back down to the valley every fall and bred them almost exclusively to the same bull. That way I got a set of half brothers to turn out.

This is a good read extension.psu.edu/crossbreeding-is-a-good-ideawe used a lot of our own bulls for the past several years but we do AI as well, but we are also a purebred breeder which makes our bull selection simple right. gizmom

i'm going to keepa few this year.. just not liking much of anything anyone is sellin.
my first bull calves i kept years ago.. took one into the vet I sold for a BSE. Vet checked him out.. said it was the highest level of semen count he's ever seen.
He's in the stockyards all the time as well checking all those.. that makes you feel good.
